Any private property, whether it is a cottage or a cottage, needs protection. For these purposes, a good wooden fence is great. But what kind of fence will it cost without a gate? The best entrance for such a fence is the wooden gate. A product made by yourself, decorates even the most simple fence.
Advantages of wooden gates
For the gate can be used almost any type of wood. But the service life of different types of wood is not very different. Many inexpensive breeds are very durable and will serve as a gate for more than one year.
Optimal choice for a similar product is larch. Coniferous rocks are very strong, they have been used in construction for many centuries and only strengthen their positions in this area. Larch wood is resistant to rot and moisture.
Despite the low cost and aesthetic appearance, wood has a number of significant drawbacks:
- low strength;
- short service life - from 5 years;
- low resistance to fires.
Often to increase the strength of the gate, their frame is made of metal. This not only improves the performance of wood, but also gives the gate a unique look.
Before starting marking the material for the gate, you need to measure the place for their installation. Even small discrepancies in size may be fraught with flaws in the work of the wicket. Therefore, all defects in the fence should be eliminated before the installation of the gate.
After measuring the opening, you need to calculate the total width of the gate and the width of each individual leaf. It is best to create a drawing or drawing. This will allow you to take into account all the features of the fence and install a wooden hinged gate without errors.
The width of the future gate largely depends on the following factors:
- Availability and brand of the machine. The larger the car - the wider the gate. If the garage or parking for cars are inside the site, then the gate must have a stock of 50-100 cm for maneuvers during check-in and parking.
- Building and garden. If your plot has a garden and it is actively used, then a wide gate will be very handy. For the import of fertilizers, seedlings or land, large cars are used. The same applies to the importation of building materials and machinery.
- Distance from the gate to the road. When building a gate, you need to take into account the distance to the road - if it is large, then the size of the doors can be unlimited. Otherwise, in the swinging condition, the gate may interfere with the passage of the vehicle.
If you do not know what size of structure is needed for your site - use the standard size (3-4 meters).
Preparation and calculation of material
When calculating the height of the gate it is worth to repel from the value of 120 cm. The size is considered to be minimal. It can vary depending on the height of the fence and other conditions. In addition to the doors, the gates need support. Their height should be greater than the gate height by at least 1 meter. This difference is immersed in the soil for structural stability.
For the construction will need square bars with a section of 4 cm. They will serve as a frame for future gates. For this purpose, you can use metal, but then you need a drill to make holes. The best material for the gate supports is oak - it is one of the strongest and moisture resistant rocks.
For the shelling of the frame of the gate a fence with a cross section of 3 to 5 cm is used. In addition to wood, the gate needs:
- Espagnolet or lock (for wicket, if present);
- hinges for the lock;
- canopies (the number depends on the design);
- screws or nails.
Lock the gate is optional - but this will increase the security of the site. For sawing the material, an electric jigsaw will be required. In addition to it, the following tools will be needed to construct the gate:
- drill and screwdriver;
- level and measuring tape.
Most tools will be found in the house for almost everyone. Missing elements can be easily rented, this will save a lot on the construction of the gate.
Installation of supports
Before installing the gate supports, it is necessary to prepare the soil at the site of work. For this use a shovel, rake and other garden tools. The soil is dug to a depth of 20 cm, depending on the soil. During the installation of the gate supports, large stones and rhizomes of plants must be removed. Then the ground is leveled with rakes. At the poles, pegs are installed - pegs, between which string is tightened.
If you install supports for gates made of wood - they must be impregnated with antiseptic agents before digging. The part that is immersed in the ground is treated with mastic or resins. This will protect the wood from rotting and moisture.
For piers digging pits from 1 meter, the depth is considered the minimum for long operation. At the bottom of the pits pour sand, a layer of 10 cm, then spill it with water and rammer. When the water slightly absorbed - immerse the pillars. They must coincide with each other in height up to 5 mm. The marking of the supports is verified by the water level and the tensioned thread. The vertical position of the poles is checked with the help of a plumb bob.
When the poles are inside the pits, crushed stone, 25 cm thick, falls into it. A concrete solution (1 part of cement to 2 parts of sand) is poured over the rubble.
It is inconvenient to carry out installation of supports to one person. To work does not give you any discomfort - enlist the help of a friend or hire an employee. Even to support the supports during the pouring of cement, another person's help is needed.
After the solution has dried, it is possible to proceed with the installation of the flaps. If you are unsure of the strength of concrete - wait a couple more days. Otherwise, the supports will not support the weight of the doors and the concrete will crack.
To impart gates and supports to the fortress, a support beam is attached from above. It serves as an edge of structural rigidity and reduces the load from the flaps to the supports.
The frame of the gate
For creating. frame should be marked and sawn timber according to the size of the opening. The resulting bars are laid out on a flat surface in the form of a rectangle. The smoothness of the faces is checked by the level
If you do not know what sizes and materials to use for gates and supports - see the video review of the product made by yourself:
In the corners of the bars make holes with a drill and fasten them with nagels, nails or self-tapping screws. For additional strength in the corners and in the center of the frame, there are steel corners and cross bars. At the point of contact, at the corners, the bars are cut at 45 degrees. At the corners, crossbeams are placed and fixed with screws.
The most creative stage of creating a gate is the skin. It can be made solid or latticed - it all depends on your imagination. The most practical is considered a monolithic fastening. But if you want to simplify the design and save material, you can make small gaps between the fence.
To the frame, the slats are bolted so that they look beyond the borders of the future flaps 15-20 cm. When all the elements are attached, you can level all the racks to one level.
Mounting of leaflets
The final stage is the fastening of the flaps to the supports. To do this, use the finished loops. One side is applied to the support column, the other to the sash. The details are screwed with screws with screw thread. The location of fastening loops is better marked in advance, it should be the same on both leaflets. To shorten the immersion time of the self-tapping screw, make small holes with a drill in the fastening points.
Following this detailed instructions, you can easily make and attach the swing gates with your own hands. After installation, the finished product can be covered with stain, paint or varnish.
